Visiting Partner: Theresa Ermer

Home Institution: Medical Student at FAU, Germany

Host Institution: Yale, U.S.A.

Rotation and Time: TRENAL Visiting Predoctoral Student 2016

Details of visit: Theresa joined the lab of Professor Peter Aronson in April 2016. She has been collaborating with Doctors Fredric Finkelstein and Chirag Parikh to set up a clinical study. Theresa is investigating links between uremic toxins and systemic inflammation in ESRD patients on dialysis treatment.

“Before I joined TRENAL, I never would have imagined that I could be coordinating a clinical study. But it works and now I will soon be publishing my first first author paper. Learning on the job is really what makes all the difference and my mentors have been very supportive. Yale brings incredibly inspiring, dedicated and diverse people together in one place. Working and living with them has been my pleasure and privilege.”

Award: The TRENAL team congratulates Theresa for having been selected as a 2016 ASN Kidney STARS award recipient. The goal of ASN Kidney STARS program is to stimulate interest in nephrology careers by targeting medical students, residents, and graduate students with an interest in nephrology but who have not yet committed to applying to a fellowship. In addition to tailored events and networking opportunities, this program provides $800 in travel support, complimentary registration to attend the ASN Annual Meeting at Kidney Week, in Chicago, IL, and complimentary membership to the society.
