Back in Berlin I started an explorative study under the supervision of PD Dr. med Adrian Schreiber, who specializes on ANCA vasculitis – a rare autoimmune disorder. Using flow-cytometry we investigated several leukocyte subpopulations in urine samples from affected patients to assess disease activity and identify new biomarkers to facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic decision making. We hope this could eventually serve as surrogate for renal biopsy.
After establishing a protocol and recruiting patients in Berlin for six months, I was able to move to London to continue the project at University College London (UCL) under the supervision of Prof. Alan Salama, thanks to the TRENAL program.
Through this unique opportunity I can recruit even more patients suffering from this rare condition and compare patient populations from Berlin and London, thus hopefully making my results more reliable. Moreover, I can learn new skills and techniques while enjoying a very young and international workplace. On top of all that living abroad for some time, especially in an amazing city such as London, is a great experience that I will never forget.
